Portugal The Man

Psychedelic rock icons “Portugal. The Man” have been on top of the alternative mountain for years, headlining festivals and releasing one critically acclaimed album after another. Their newest album, In the Mountain In the Cloud, takes a different approach than some of their previous efforts.

Ryan Neighbors, keyboardist/backing vocalist for the band, tells RSU-Radio that the new album took nearly nine months to make. During that time they took a completely different approach than in the past, recording in multiple studios and trying out several new instruments. “We had a string player come in and do Cello all over the record… usually we just record ten songs and put them all on a record, but this one took a lot more thought …,” says Neighbors.

Promotion of the record hasn’t come without a few unusual, yet unfortunate, incidents such as the theft of the band’s van, trailer and equipment after performing at Lollapalooza. “All our hearts just kinda sunk…we were just speechless…that day it was all over the news, all over Twitter and all over Facebook… everyone was really supportive,” says Neighbors. With the help of social networking and local police, the band eventually recovered most of their equipment and continues to promote the new album.
