I attended the final performance of “MJ” during its Tulsa run, which took place from October 15th through 20th. The production impressed me from start to finish. The set design was extraordinary, with pieces cleverly modeled after Jackson’s iconic album covers and imagery, instantly immersing the audience in his world. The music selection was a treat, offering more than just the usual hits—it included deep cuts like “Price of Fame,” a rare Bad era demo released in 2012, and “Money” from the HIStory album, catering to even the most dedicated fans.
While the cast delivered stellar performances, consistently hitting their marks, a few elements fell short. Some song mash-ups felt awkward—specifically “Earth Song”/”They Don’t Care About Us,” which, though a great number in context, didn’t quite fit. Additionally, a couple of scenes bordered on cringeworthy, such as when the question, “What do you have to say about the allegations?” was raised but never revisited. However, these weaker moments were outweighed by brilliant ones—such as scenes where young Jackson 5 Michael, Thriller-era Michael, and Dangerous-era Michael share the stage simultaneously. One standout sequence evokes the opening scene of Rocketman, where adult Michael confronts his childhood traumas in a visually captivating and emotionally charged moment.
Overall, “MJ: The Musical” is an ambitious and captivating tribute to one of the most influential artists in music history. The show delivers unforgettable performances, stunning visuals, and a unique narrative that leaves a lasting impression. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or just curious about the legend, this musical offers something special for everyone.
Although the Tulsa run is over, “MJ” will have its Northwest Arkansas premiere at Walton Arts Center in May 2025!
