The first fully authorized documentary detailing the life of Nirvana leader, Kurt Cobain, is set to air for the public May 4th, 2015 on HBO. “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck” premiered at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival in January, receiving high praises by those critics and fans in attendance.

Written and directed by Brett Morgen, the documentary uses a combination of filmmaking techniques. Animation, in addition to interviews with friends and family, give the audience insight into the mind of the grunge rock legend. Most important however, are the previously unseen home videos that Morgen edited into “Montage of Heck”. The candid, personal footage chronicles Cobain from his youth, to his troubled last days.

The highlight of the film is reportedly the showing of an unreleased, 12 minute acoustic song performed by Cobain on camera. A companion book will be released on April 7th, 2015 with the same name. It will contain drawings and photography from the Nirvana frontman.
