The 35th annual CMJ Music Marathon takes place October 13th thru 17th in its usual location of New York City. The yearly festival is put on by the College Music Journal, or CMJ, an online publication that focuses on music for college radio stations.

The CMJ Music Marathon features many, fascinating events. It is a college music convention of sorts, that brings in students, who are employed by their university’s radio station, in addition to music promoters, from all over the United States and Canada. The event has live performances by industry and fan favorite musicians who perform at various venues around the NYC area. Parties are put on by the different music promotion companies and conversation panels run all week. It is a very much about networking, but mostly looks to promote what everyone attending has in common – a love for great music.

RSU Radio is excited to announce that they will be represented once again this year by their Music Director, student Geoff Parachin, and their Station Manager, Tip Crowley. Crowley is a former student of Rogers State who also spent three years as 91.3’s Music Director from 2007-10. In 2007, RSU sent him to the CMJ Music Marathon and he is quite excited about another chance to attend the festival. On the impact of the event, he says “it’s a great learning opportunity for those who want to break into radio but it’s also a lot of fun at the same time being able to see concerts and New York City”.

Other than listening to RSU Radio, there is no better way to keep up to date on the latest musical acts hitting the college radio airwaves. Most often, these are lesser known artists, many of whom are extremely talented, and are looking to make an impact on music. It is not uncommon, however, for popular acts like Wilco, REM, Beck and Ben Folds to receive heavy airplay on college radio. This platform is how they all got their starts.

Each week, the hundreds of college radio stations around North America submit their charts to CMJ.com in reference to the top artists their station is playing. CMJ then compiles them into one chart and releases their top top 200 every Thursday.
