The entire music world is mourning at the loss of David Bowie, who succumbed to cancer. Bowie was 69 years old. The announcement was made on the musician’s Facebook page:

“January 10 2016 – David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”

Bowie’s career spanned six decades and included 27 studio albums, over 100 singles, and numerous number one singles and platinum records. His influence was also felt beyond music. In addition to his songwriting, singing, and musical arrangement, Bowie was known for his unique fashion and eccentric on-screen presence in acting roles.

In a tweet, Bowie’s son, Duncan Jones shared a personal photo and commented on his father’s death:

David Bowie’s final album,  (pronounced “Blackstar”) was released on January 8th. The seven-track album is thought to be his goodbye to fans and friends. The album and related music videos contain imagery associated with religion, the afterlife, include references to Biblical characters.
