Listeners should prepare themselves for a mind-bending and surreal sound experience because Sean Lennon and Les Claypool just dropped a monolith of an album on us all. That’s right. The two artists just formed a new band they are calling The Claypool Lennon Delirium. Their first album Monolith of Phobos is scheduled to release June 3, 2016.
Monolith of Phobos is a psychedelic pop album that is sure to expand listeners’ taste in music. The album is traditional and progressive and contains just enough pop so that is palatable to listeners’ trained taste. However, it also explores new and exotic flavors that will help listeners discover different can be sweet. This is largely due to the collaboration of the two music masters who combined their expertise to serve up something new and delicious. Lennon is known for living in the fray of pop music while Claypool has managed to stay rooted in alternative rock.
The album is not overly sweet though. There are a number of tracks that are salty enough that may make the album hard to swallow for some listeners. The songs “OxyContin Girl” and “Cricket and the Genie” emphasize the savory mood of the album. The tracks serve as a pushback against the hypocrisy that exists in the United States. The songs emphasize the contradiction of the war on drugs by pointing out the biggest drug dealers –large pharmaceutical companies – are going unpunished as they continue to promote harmful and legal drugs to the United States.
Monolith of Phobos does have something to offer. It offers a sound and a voice to the state of affairs that are occurring in America. Its’ musical notes denote themes of drug abuse, big brother government, and ever growing social media sickness. It is heavy. It is large. Most importantly it is flavorful and created in good taste. Check out the Monolith of Phobos and step into the trippy trance of America’s darkest hallucinogens.
