Press Play: Flightless Records

Flightless Records, Melbourne, Australia’s popular indie label, has music fans around the world buzzing due to new releases they have scheduled over the coming months.

Started in 2012 by Eric Moore, Flightless Records will be releasing new albums from King Gizzard on 6/23 – the band Moore plays drums in, The Murlocs on 7/28, The Babe Rainbow on 6/2 and Leah Senior on 5/26.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – Murder of the Universe – June 23rd

Currently one of the most popular bands out of Australia, psych rock group King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard are set to release their new album, Murder of the Universe, in late June. It is the second of five scheduled albums they seek to release in 2017.

The group formed in 2010, quickly gaining popularity around the world for their eclectic sound, in which the 7-piece group uses a number of non-traditional instruments, and their highly energetic shows. They’ve released 9 albums to date and consistently peak towards the top of the college radio charts. The group also just announced a new North American tour.

The Murlocs – Old Locomotive – July 28th

Based in Melbourne, Australia, The Murlocs are extremely popular among King Gizzard fans due to their close ties to the group and similar sound. Since their formation in 2011, they’ve played high profile shows with Thee Oh Sees and, of course, King Gizzard who signed them to Flightless Records a few years ago.

Their a garage rock group whose sound would make the early pioneers of the genre proud. The Murlocs brand new, and third full length studio album, Old Locomotive, is due out at the end of July. They’ve released two songs, “Noble Soldier” and “Oblivion”, off this forthcoming album, which are already receiving heavy spins at RSU Radio.

The Babe Rainbow – S/T – June 2nd

Aside from an EP and several singles released between 2013-15, The Babe Rainbow have yet to release a full length album. This changes on July 14th when they unleash their 12 track debut record through Flightless.

Members of the group describe their sound as that of psychedelic garage pop. Based out of Byron Bay, Australia, The Babe Rainbow would fit right along with those rock and roll artists who shot to fame during the formation of the psych rock scene in the 1960’s and 70’s. Check out the video for their first single, “Peace Blossom Boogy”, off their upcoming self-titled album.

Leah Senior – Pretty Faces – May 26th

Leah Senior’s sound stands apart from other artists on Flightless Records. While the majority of their artists have more of a pure garage and/or psych rock sound, this Melbourne based solo musician leans towards softer folk rock. Senior’s website explains that her music “pays homage to her dark folk roots while hinting at layers of pop and psychedelic undertones”. She’s extremely popular in Australia, which should soon translate elsewhere, and was nominated for two Age Music Victoria Awards for her 2015 album, Summer’s On the Ground

Her second studio album, Pretty Faces, which is due out later this month, was recorded and produced by one of King Gizzard’s guitarists’, Joey Walker. His group even recruited her to provide vocals for parts of their upcoming summer release, Murder of the Universe. Senior tours extensively, has played some of the biggest festivals in Australia and is sure to break into college radio soon.
