Oklahoma’s local music scene has always had a great bond and produced consistently good shows. Mid-level national artists have always seemed hesitant to make stops in Oklahoma, at least until recently. With the Cain’s Ballroom ranking in the top 20 club venues in the world for ticket sales, and venues like The Criterion and Diamond Ballroom showing success, Oklahoma has stepped in as a major tour destination. Even smaller venues like Soundpony and The Colony are benefiting from the influx of interest in playing for loyal Oklahoma music fans.
Here are some recently announced RSU Radio artists making their way to Oklahoma in the coming months:
Father John Misty and Tennis will be a Cain’s Ballroom on August 23rd. It is unclear if Father John will bring his player piano or not.
The xx received huge success on college radio with their latest album, I See You. They’ll be playing The Criterion in OKC on October 12th.
Explosions in the Sky played Oklahoma City in April, and are coming back for more. They’ll be at Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa on October 6.
The Old 97’s will also be making two stops in the state this year. They’ll start at the Cain’s on September 14th, and follow that up at the Diamond Ballroom on September 15th.
Modest Mouse will return to OKC this summer, with opening act Morning Teleportation. This show will be at The Diamond Ballroom on June 8th.
The Cain’s brings fans an eclectic bill on September 23rd. Psychobilly freakers The Reverend Horton Heat will headline with Fishbone, Strung Out, and Los Kung Fu Monkeys completing one of the more diverse lineups to tour together in a while.
Gary Clark, Jr. will host a short residence at the Cain’s this Summer. For two nights, the modern day blues musician will play the house that Bob built. These shows will be held September 30th and August 1st.
The legendary post-hardcore prequel to The Mars Volta have made their return. At The Drive In is coming to Oklahoma City with a show at The Criterion on June 13th.
Reggae rockers Michael Franti and Spearhead will hit the Cain’s this coming August 21st. RSU Radio will be giving away 5 pairs to this show, so stay tuned!
Young the Giant will hit OKC, their second time in Oklahoma this year, on September 28. They will be at The Criterion.
Indie rockers Japanther will play an intimate show at Soundpony on June 28th.
