Press Play: Strange Ranger

Originally Sioux Falls, band Strange Ranger has adopted a new name and several different styles along the way.  Older albums range from heavy and simply-constructed to soft and intricate. Most recently, they released 5-track EP, How It All Went By.

The two core members of Strange Ranger are Isaac Eiger and Fred Nixon.  The pair met in a Bozeman, Montana high school, bonded over a Modest Mouse obsession, and have played music together ever since.  Under their first moniker, Sioux Falls, they released album Rot Forever (2016) with EP Sunbeams Through Your Head and (a new name) only six months later.

The different EPs and album released by Eiger and Nixon generally fall under the “indie-rock” genre; they just all bring a different flavor to the style.  Daymoon feels like a hazy spring day,  lush and muted. Rot Forever is a lonely, angry beast.  How It All Went By is the end of a college house show, buzzing with energy, but almost-sad to go.

How It All Went By comes in at under 15-minutes, but is packed full with the raw emotion Strange Ranger has perfected.  Wavering between nonchalance and intense-sincerity, the EP’s lyrics offer insight into Eiger and Nixon’s lives.  Their voices are pop-punchy and energetic, then give way to charged-howls.
