Press Play: Hey Cowboy!

Out of the proud and rowdy city of Austin, Texas comes a trio of rambunctious cowgirls. This trio calls themselves Hey Cowboy! and is composed of Gaby Rodriguez on vocals and drums, Sydney-Harding Sloan on vocals and synthesizer and Micah Vargas on vocals and bass. Looking for a guitarist? You won’t find one in these here parts. Their blend of bass, synth, drums, and vocals is all that’s needed to produce a simple yet original sound.

Hey Cowboy! made their debut in 2018 with The Soft Kind. The effort introduced the band’s signature sound of atmospheric harmonies, experimental synth and punk influence. Their tender yet tenacious pop is easy to get lost in. Harding-Sloan’s vocals are timeless with all of the saccharine sweetness of vintage vocals cut with an indie edge. Standout track “Cowgirl” is a psychedelic synth voyage that shifts from fast to slow tempos, and from energetic to ethereal melodies.

In 2019, Hey Cowboy! released the tiny but mighty Sandy Cheeks EP. Composed of three tracks, the EP was a promising precursor of what was to come on their latest album Get in My Fanny Pack and Let’s Go. The effort was released just last Friday and continues the band’s innovative, miraculous music. Track “Houses” grooves with a pulsing bassline, loose percussion and oozing synth. “Cherry Jerry Citrus” is a standout track with its potent drum beat and punchy bassline. Like with every Hey Cowboy! track, the synth injects sweeping colors and the harmonies cut through the soundscape like a hot knife through butter.
