Brittany Howard Covers Funkadelic for Spotify Series

Today’s Spotify Singles release is the first piece of new material that Brittany Howard has shared since her beloved solo debut album Jaime last year. Howard released a cover of the Funkadelic classic “You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks,” as well as a live in-studio version of her track “Stay High.” The cover offers a refreshing take on the funk band’s 1971 song. Although decades divide the two artists, Howard’s music is no stranger to funky territory (see past single “History Repeats” for an example). Howard’s powerful voice and presence are a perfect match for this track.

The new take of “Stay High” is more subtle with Howard singing “I just want to stay high with you” over shimmering guitar chords. The live performance captures both the strength and grace of her dynamic vocals. Stream both tracks below.
