Press Play: Oracle Sisters

In a wooden shack on a farm in southwest France, painter Lewis Lazar, mathematician Christopher Willatt and drummer Julia Johanssen concoct spellbinding tracks that feel like a remnant of an altered past. The three call themselves Oracle Sisters, and they craft folky, sun-soaked songs bursting with soothing melodies and velvety harmonies. The Parison trio first made waves with their 2018 single “Always” in 2018. The hazy-eyed pop track (and the trio of singles that followed) paved the way for Oracle Sisters’ unique brand of mellow psychedelia and space age folk.

Oracle Sisters released their debut effort Paris I this past July. The opening track “Asc. Scorpio” sets the scene for the tracks that follow with abstract lyrics that rest effortlessly on a subtle drum beat and warm vocal harmonies. “The Vibes” is another standout moment as the band fuses their dreamy sound with subtle tropical grooves. Paris I closes with “Honest Man”, a laid back track that also comes with a studio Ghibli inspired animation.

Overall, Paris I is adventurous and excellent, offering pure musical meditation. There is an undeniable sense of chilled out euphoria at the center of the EP that washes over every track. With their first effort, Oracle Sisters have shown their ambition and ability for folk-pop songwriting.
