From Taiwanese rock to boat-crossed lovers to 80’s covers, the singles this week have a little bit of everything.
Future Islands – “For Sure”
With the The Far Field having been released in 2017, “For Sure” is the first new track from Future Islands in three years. The track is sincere and dense, with sweet synths and propulsive bass. The single is accompanied by a dizzyingly-stunning post-apocalyptic video.
Sunset Rollercoast, OHHYUK – “Candlelight”
“Candlelight” is the first single for the upcoming Sunset Rollercoaster album SOFT STORM. The track features Oh Hyuk of OHHYUK. With murmuring vocals and deep synths, this song lingers between comforting and gripping.
Girlhood – “It Might Take a Woman”
Girlhood is a London-based synthy, R&B duo. The two met as Tessa strolled passed Christian’s boat, and he asked her to sing on some tracks. “It Might Take a Woman” is the fireside song that’ll warm up your soul in no time.
Q – “Take Me Where Your Heart Is”
Is it cuffing season already? The tender falsetto and shimmery background of this song will underscore all those sweet autumn moments. The music video will have you wanting find love in a bowling alley.
Tennis – “Superstar”
The dreamy modern-retro cover of the Carpenters song is fit for a roller-rink or a dramatic movie musical moment. Alaina Moore of Tennis cites Karen Carpenter as a major influence and was glad to create a version of the song that didn’t exactly sound like Tennis or the Carpenters.
Wild Pink – “Yolk in the Fur”
With a soft hum echoing behind the track and crisp rhythms, Wild Pink’s “The Shining But Tropical” feels welcoming yet exciting. Towards the end of the song, you can hear a chirp-chirp-chirp cell phone recording of cicadas. The track is from forthcoming album A Billion Little Lights.
Kississippi – “Around Your Room”
“Around Your Room” is destined to be the anthem for the next-great-coming-of-age movie. Dancing around the room, fluttery hearts, late night secrets? Kississippi’s first track since 2018 is candy-coated synth pop.
