Commemorate Black History Month with Black Radio: Telling It Like It Was

To commemorate Black History Month, RSU Radio will be airing the Radio Smithsonian production through the month of February. Black Radio: Telling It Like It Was discusses the role the radio played in the 20th century transformation of black American communities through interviews, historical airchecks, comedy, drama, and music.

Originally created in 1996, specially reformatted into six hours of content for radio airing in 2021. It will feature the original host, Lou Rawls, along with a new narration by Jacquie Gales Webb, one of the producers of the 2021 reformatting project.

You’re in for revelations of the many milestones in Black radio programming and African American culture, featuring such topics as the role of radio during the great migration of Black people from the South, trail-blazing Black DJs and stations, and Black radio during the civil rights movement.

Tune in to hear it Wednesdays at 5 PM and Fridays at 1 PM every week this month on RSU Radio.
