It’s been almost three years since we were blessed with Sudan Archives’ Athena. Her career under the moniker Sudan Archives (her given name being Brittney Denise Parks) began in 2017 with her self-titled EP. After that, she released another EP Sink in 2018. Her debut album Athena was released in 2019, met with critical acclaim. Her style cannot be easily defined, as she is constantly experimenting, innovating, and expanding with her music. It can best be described as a mix of R&B, soul, hip hop, traditional African music, Irish music, and pop.

Luckily for listeners, the violinist, producer, and singer-songwriter has been releasing new music this year. First, she released her single “Home Maker” accompanied by a music video on March 25th. The song’s lyrics are about homemaking in a romantic relationship. The video is the singer in a used furniture store dancing alongside a group of men. Then, on May 18th, she released the music video for her single “Selfish Soul”, which is about black women’s hair and the struggle that they face. The music video is Parks and her friends having a good time and dancing together. Both music videos were followed with behind the scenes videos on Parks’ channel.
