Urban Wilderness: Turkey Mountain Rocks!
Red dirt music has a rich history in Oklahoma since it began in Stillwater in the 1970’s. Now, red dirt artists from all over the country have come together to release an album honoring these red dirt luminaries. A Red Dirt Ramble: Tribute to the Pioneers of Red Dirt Music features nine heartfelt covers of songs from legendary red dirt artists like Bob Childers, Don Morris, and Brandon Jenkins.
The album is the first of three volumes to be released and part of a larger “multimedia project” from co-producers Monica Taylor and her husband Travis Fite. The release also includes a songbook, videos and interviews about the early red dirt music scene, and more. Monica and Travis perform several songs alongside other Oklahoma artists like Jared Tyler, Jake Lynn, Mike McClure, Kaylyn Fay, and John Cooper and Brad Piccolo of the Red Dirt Rangers.
A Red Dirt Ramble celebrates not only the legends of red dirt, but also the place it was born. Located in central Oklahoma, just on the outskirts of Stillwater lies an inconspicuous farm house; simply called “The Farm,” it served as the creative hub for a community of artists and musicians during the late 60’s and 70’s, where songwriters would come to swap ideas and share songs. “Red dirt music has grown so far since its humble beginnings in Stillwater.” says Monica Taylor, “This is a great time to recognize and honor the tight-knit community of people, both past and present.” A Red Dirt Ramble honors its history with interviews, videos, and a songbook featuring photos and stories from The Farm.
Released on all streaming platforms July 11th, A Red Dirt Ramble: Tribute to the Pioneers of Red Dirt Music is also available on CD and vinyl thanks to Horton Records. If you want to learn more about the project or red dirt history you can visit reddirtramble.com.
