Urban Wilderness: Turkey Mountain Rocks!
From Charleston South Carolina, Infinitefreefall has been around over a decade, with their first EP – Kayfabe – turning 13 next year. They bring that big, atmospheric sound similar to Other Lives, but feature faster, more upbeat riffs and drumbeats like you’d find in new-wave or post-punk. Their latest album, Belief Systems, feels like their most refined yet – with Desecrated Landscape and the title track perfectly capturing their almost bipolar sound. Out now, Belief Systems Live features previous singles as well as a couple new tracks.
It’s hard to say when Mitchel Emms got his big break – was it the 500 gigs he’d played before turning? Or was it his appearance on UK’s The Voice back in 2013? Big and atmospheric, but somehow personal and introspective, Emm’s vocals hit that same somber soft-spot as a young Thom Yorke – thankfully without Thom Yorke. Emms narrative-like albums tell his stories with instrumentation similar to bands like Dream Theater – particularly Emms’ 7-minute track, “Modern Living” – with waning guitar riffs and softspoken, snappy drums.
Not to be confused with the pain-relieving gel patch, Solampas is the project of one 19-year-old Salomão Villani. Villani’s lofi sound is defined by its reverby, distorted instrumentation that feels like reliving a forgotten memory. Translated to “Could This Be Nothing?,” Será Que Nada?’s introspection, warm, soft sound, and palpable nervousness perfectly capture the feeling at the heart of the question – that spiraling feeling of young love and its accompanying feelings of insecurity. Villani released Será Que Nada? is available to stream now on most major platforms, you just might have to do some digging to find it.
