Press Play: The Record Company

todayFebruary 3, 2016

The Record Company, a California based group, have that vintage blues rock sound that music enthusiasts will love. Though they formed back in 2011, the group only has a couple of EPs under their moniker. That changes on February 12, when the band releases their debut LP, Give It Back To You

The blues rock group is comprised of three, highly gifted musicians – Chris Vos, Alex Stiff and Marc Cazorla. They contribute their talents in numerous areas for the group. All three members provide vocals. Vos is the lead singer, however, in addition to playing the guitar and harmonica. Stiff plays bass and guitar while Cazorla is on the drums and piano.

The Record Company writes and records raw, honest and catchy blues music. From the opening track on the album, “Off The Ground”, it quickly becomes clear that they play blues rock true to the genre. Every song on the ten track album is about real, everyday struggles. “Off The Ground” starts with a soft, smooth bass riff and eventually picks up the tempo with the electric guitar and drums. It’s a song about picking yourself up when you’re down. This blues theme stays the course throughout the album. They sing about loneliness, love troubles, the crooked city and, of course, long, hard days.

The Record Company strives to have that rustic and classic blues sound in their music but also are trying to put their own touch on the genre. Lead singer, Chris Vos, explained in a recent interview that the group has “been influenced by early electric guitar…like [John Lee] Hooker, Muddy Waters and Jimmy Reed…but [are] just as influenced by bands like the Stones and The Stooges”. These various influences are distinctly evident in their music. While they would fit right in place with the great blues rock musicians of the 50’s and 60’s, they use the bass and drums to have an edgier, more modern sound.

The Record Company’s songs, “Off The Ground”, “Don’t Let Me Get Lonely”, “On The Move” and “Feels So Good” can currently be heard on 91.3 FM. Although RSU Radio selected only these four songs for airplay, Give It Back To You is one of those rare albums where any track from the record would be excellent for rotation. Obviously it’s still very early in the year, but as of now, The Record Company’s debut LP is one of the best of 2016.
