Press Play: Honeyblood

todayNovember 21, 2016

Background

I know for me it is difficult to find new and interesting music, but Honeyblood is different. Their strong mix of indie rock, lo-fi, and just a dash of punk give them a unique sound that peaked my interest. Their music is upbeat and cheerful, but not overbearingly sweet. They have a more mature sound that could appeal to a wide range of listeners. If this is already sounding good to you, here are 5 more reasons to press play on Honeyblood.

  1. Honeyblood is only a duo. As complex as their music seems, Stina Tweeddale and Shona McVicar formed the band in 2012. Tweeddale is on guitar and McVicar was on drums until she left to pursue other creative endeavors. She was replaced by Cat Myers in September of 2014.
  2. Honeyblood actually has a recipe. In an interview Tweeddale stated that “Honeyblood” is max of honey, water, cornflour, and red food dye. Tweeddale continued by stating that the mixture was used as part of a Halloween costume one year while she was performing. Tweeddale swished the mixture around and her mouth and sprayed it on the audience during the same performance.
  3. Both Tweeddale and McVicar were part of different bands before forming Honeyblood in 2012. Tweeddale was a member of the grunge rock band partwindpartwolf and McVicar was a member of Boycotts an alternative pop band. Both bands are based in Glasgow, Scotland were the duo met.
  4. Honeyblood’s formation was, in part, due to the want of creative freedom. Honeyblood’s formation was no accident, Tweeddale wanted to write her play her own music. She approached McVicar with the proposal of forming a new group and the rest is history.
  5. Myers is not the only replacement the band has experienced. Early in the bands career McVicar was forced to take a hiatus to complete her studies to earn here degree in dentistry. Rah Morriss temporarily took over for McVicar until she returned.
