Press Play: Father John Misty

todayApril 25, 2017

Background

Authenticity is an incredible way to connect with other people. Music is also an incredible way to connect with others, and the combination together creates a vibration currency that is sure to make people feel less alone and awkward in their journeys. Father John Misty embodies both authenticity and musical talent. Father John Misty is a stage name of course, for Josh Tillman. Tillman grew up in a religious household and that has been a major influence on his life’s trajectory, but not in the way many may anticipate. Here are 5 reasons to press play on the indie rock artist Father John Misty.

  1. He went after his dreams. Due his religious upbringing, Misty originally wanted to be a pastor because he was attracted to the performance element of the position. But, he later abandoned the ideologies he was raised with and became a musician.
  2. Father John Misty isn’t an alter ego. He has been very honest about the fact that he is authentic self on stage, even though his stage name would suggest that he had evented an alter ego.
  3. He is honest about his struggles. The artist has been very open about his struggles with depression and substance abuse.  In fact, he deleted his social media because he says it fed his self-loathing when he read comments from people who had hateful things to say about him.
  4. Misty has balance. He is very careful in interviews. He has said that he has trouble being completely honest in those public spaces, but music is where he is truly himself.
  5. He is an experience seeker. The artist has worked with Lady Gaga and Beyoncé on some of their music, but he did it out of curiosity instead of aw. He has said he wanted to see “how the sausage was made.”

If you’re looking for an artist who is real and relatable be sure to press play on Father John Misty.
