What is Bedroom Pop?

todayMay 27, 2019

Background

In an age when iPhones hold vital mixing software and bedrooms act as studios, attempting to become successful in the music industry has become easier than ever before. This accessibility to production equipment has made way for genres like “bedroom pop” to bloom. These artists abandon the notion of producers and studios to record in their own bedrooms. Whether the choice is stylistic or due to lack of resources, it provides a characteristically low-fidelity sound. This lower-quality production accepts imperfections and spotlights raw artistry.

Although bedroom pop sound may not be as technically sleek as its contemporary counterparts, it is just as charismatic. Artists are known for creating a dreamy atmosphere with heavy reverb and substantial synthesizers. The often serene vocals coast over mellow instrumentals for ambient and captivating music.

Although home studios are not a new concept, the bedroom pop phenomenon is unique in its ability to blow up on social media and streaming apps. Many popular bedroom pop artists found their start on YouTube, including up-and-coming Peach Pit and Boy Pablo. Spotify is another major catalyst of mainstream exposure with curated playlist “Bedroom Pop” now garnering almost 400,000 followers.

The creative freedom that bedroom pop cultivates is another one of the driving factors in its sudden popularity. It allows aspiring artists who don’t own top-notch equipment or possess technical abilities to create emotional and ear-catching content. It revolutionizes the conventions of creating music, no longer limiting it to those privileged with vast resources.
