How Tik Tok Blew Up Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Dreams’

todayOctober 16, 2020

Background

For the first time in four decades, Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” has re-entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The 70’s song has skyrocketed after user 420doggface208, real name Nathan Apodaca, posted this blissful Tik Tok featuring the track.

After this Tik Tok went viral, the single off 1977’s Rumors experienced a huge bump in streaming and sales numbers. As reported by Billboard, “Dreams” has seen an 88.7% increase in streams and a whopping 374% jump in download sales since the video began to take off. Now, a few weeks later, Billboard has reported on how impactful the video has really been. On the latest (as of October 17th) Billboard chart, “Dreams” stands at No. 21, making it the song’s first appearance on the chart since the fall of 1977.

The album that the single comes from, Rumors, is also experiencing a resurgence. The record currently stands at No. 13 on the Billboard 200. Mick Fleetwood showed his appreciation by joining Tik Tok and recreating Apodaca’s video. Other people have also taken up the “challenge” and posted their own Tik Toks recreating the original.

All of this led up to the biggest moment in this Fleetwood Mac Tik Tok saga. Last Tuesday, the originator of “Dreams” herself Stevie Nicks joined Tik Tok. She posted a single, simple video that was all we needed. The video featured Nicks sitting at a piano singing along while lacing up a pair of roller skates. “Afternoon vibe. Lace em’ up!” she wrote in the caption. Beside her lies a record player and of course, a container of Ocean Spray juice.
