What I heard, and could kinda see, was Tenacious D!

Saturday I had the opportunity to hear, and kinda see Tenacious D. I say “kinda” because as a short man, being in the pit amongst tall people, the only way to see well is by holding my camera above many heads; but that didn’t hinder what I’d say was a great concert.

The D opened the night playing the title track from Rize of the Fenix on what appeared to be a bland stage. Halfway through the first song their trademark “Fenix” was erected, transforming the show and becoming the backdrop for a rocking night.

They played a great selection of both new and older tracks from Low Hangin’ Fruit, Senorita, and Death Starr to Wonderboy, Tribute, Kielbasa, The Metal, and more. Even the band’s roadie got some musical love with a tribute off the new album. Aside from Jack and Kyle, the roadie received the most applause that night.

The music was fantastic, but the stage theatrics really took the show to another level. From the guitar player’s ghostly possession, teasing Thunder fans, and Kyle quitting the band for a few songs, until he was serenaded by Jack Black with Dude (I Totally Miss You), the D put on a dramatic and dynamic performance.

At what looked like the end of the show, the Fenix shot confetti into the audience, shriveled up, and left only the wings standing as the duo relinquished the stage. With the crowd in an uproar, KG and JB were birthed from the wings, walking out through the middle for an encore of some Tenacious D classics and ending the night with a gentle love ballad laced in hard rock riffs.

As Tenacious D left the stage once again, the lights came on and the crowd began to head for the exits; most of them without socks, because The D, had in fact, rocked them off!!!
