The Lion King : I’m feeling the Love

The acclaimed Broadway production of the highest grossing traditionally animated film comes to the heart of Green Country and does not disappoint. This spectacular show hits on all marks, acting, costume, and design to bring the story of Simba to life.

Opening with a massive chorus of the “Circle of Life” this musical engulfs the audience directly into the plains of Pride Rock. Giraffes, elephants, and wildebeests march through the audience and gazelle leap across the stage in a spectacle I have not seen matched before. All of the performances are terrific, namely those of adult Simba and Scar who make them feel more like Broadway characters than cartoons.

The actors, which are also the puppeteers, are what makes The Lion King so unique. Timon, Pumba, Zazu, and the Hyenas all require the actors to bring life to these consuming costume pieces. I particularly have to praise the Pumba suit/puppet because it’s simply huge.

The overall look of this show is incredible. The set is ever changing yet seamless in those changes. Often in plays or musicals you get the feeling of being at a standstill but with this show you are always on the move. The most awe inspiring moment is when Simba speaks with his father’s spirit. I won’t ruin it for you but it’s impressive.

If you can get tickets to this show before it moves on, I highly recommend it. Running through the 7th of July The Lion King is a night for the whole family that you won’t forget.
